The relationship between concealed ovulation and mating systems in anthropoid primates: a phylogenetic analysis

Article Abstract:

Aphylogenetic analysis was conducted to determine whether the absence of visual ovulatory signs, or what is known as concealed ovulation, evolved as a results of mating systems in primates. Two hypotheses regarding concealed ovulation are that it promotes paternal care and increases paternity confidence and it improves male behavior toward offspring by confusing paternity. The first hypothesis assummes that thetrait evolved under monogamy, whereas the second assumes that it evolved under a one- or multi-male mating system. Among the the results was that concealed ovulation promoted monogamyand not the other way around.

Do primates experience sperm competition?

Article Abstract:

The relation between male genitalia, mating-system structure and sperm competition among primates is analyzed. Males that mate with females who will mate other males experience sperm competition and benefit if they possess larger testes and longer penes to deposit a greater volume of sperm nearer to the ovulation site.
