A study of computerized care finds big savings
Article Abstract:
An Indiana University School of Medicine study of more than 5,000 patients reveals that medical personnel who use IBM-compatible PCs for health care management are able to cut the average cost per admission by $887, or 13 percent, while the length of hospitalization was reduced by a day. The study, which was financed by a grant of $1.3 million from the Federal Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, was done at a public hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Through a program that the researchers created, doctors made treatment decisions while considering medical costs. The system provided data such as the cost of various tests and treatments, and suggestions for less expensive and safer alternatives. The doctors were also able to access information on drugs and their potential interactions.

What do experimental studies tell us about group selection in nature?
Article Abstract:
The results of research in group selection tend to depend on experimental design. Group selection has been identified in some cases because group fitness is not directly proportional for the trait of production.
