Zooplankton effects on vertical particulate flux: testable models and experimental results
Article Abstract:
An important process driving the seasonal dynamics of nutrients in stratified water columns is the rate at which particles sink out of the euphotic zone. An important component of global carbon cycles is the sinking flux of particulate organic carbon fixed by marine phytoplankton. Mathematical models were used to examine the effects of herbivorous zooplankton on the sedimentation of particles out of the euphotic zone.

Dissolved esterase activity as a tracer of phytoplankton lysis: evidence of high phytoplankton lysis rates in the northwestern Mediterranean
Article Abstract:
Dissolved esterase activity is discussed relative to its use as a phytoplankton lysis tracer and as related to evidence of high phytoplankton lysis rates in the northwestern Mediterranean. Information on a test of key assumptions underlying use of the dissolved esterase method is given along with detail of procedures. Importance of summer phytoplankton lysis rates as a loss factor is studied.
