Household saving in LDCs: credit markets, insurance and welfare
Article Abstract:
Certain aspects of household borrowing and lending and the life-cycle behaviour of consumption and income in LDCs can be studied by using empirical evidence from countries including Thailand and Ghana. Recent research indicates that farmers and others in LDCs plan ahead at least to a certain extent when making decisions about consumption and saving. It is impossible to measure income and saving with any degree of accuracy, but it appears that saving rates are no worse in LDCs than in the industrialised world, with the exception of the higher levels of self-employed workers in the former.

Comment on R. Barro, "World Interest Rates and Investment."
Article Abstract:
A comprehensive view of international capital markets is given by R. Barro's study 'World Interest Rates and Investment', which aims to give a reason for the development of world real interest rates over the last 30 years. The author raises the question of how a very simple model can be so successful in assessing a very complex issue, and manages to determine the 'world' real interest rate by linking the sum of investments and savings across countries. The possible shortcomings of a simple model are discussed.
