Ian Wilson, who has headed Castle & Cooke, for the past year, seeks to diminish his company's dependence on its food production businesses. It was unsuccessful, however, in its attempt to takeover Dr. Pepper. Castle & Cooke needs to upgrade its marketing operation. It has taken a thirty per cent stake in A&W, with the option to buy out A&W in the next five years. Wilson still wants to acquire an established soft-drinks business, which may involve using property to generate the necessary cash.

DMA changes board committees

The Direct Marketing Assn has restructured its 40-member directorial board to make the organization more industry-focused and quicker at addressing problems. The reorganization is the biggest in the organization's history. The objective of the action is to enable the association to exploit the wisdom of a group of senior experts in eight industry segments while involving them in the board's policy making development and decisions.
