How much does size, age, or industry membership matter in transition? Studying change in organizational performance in almost 1,000 post-Soviet companies
Article Abstract:
The author explores to what extent the age, size and industrial factors affect an enterprise's overall economic performance based on a rich empirical study of over 1000 post-Soviet businesses. Results show a contradiction to conventional beliefs because the author fails to find a significant correlation between an industry's economic performance and its size, age or industrial sector; assumptions that larger enterprises are more likely to succeed and that older, more traditional enterprises are likely to fail due to inertia are challenged based on these results; organizational performance is found to be based on the ability of an enterprise to exploit changes in free market entry and exit conditions.
