Employeeism, corporate governance, and the J-firm
Article Abstract:
The combination of external corporate governance with internal employeeism, a people-oriented management philosophy, makes the Japanese firm appear to be employee-managed. A study relying on the Holmstrom scheme and the principal-agency paradigm suggests interdependence between governance, particularly by the main bank, and employeeism. The main bank can control outside investment efforts, but employeeism discourages mergers and restructuring because promotions are made mostly from within.
