Generational accounts for the Dutch public sector

Article Abstract:

The intergenerational impact of government policies in the Netherlands is examined using, and in some way extending, the standard Generational Accounting methodology of Auerbach, Gokhale and Kotlikoff. When net public sector benefits are assigned to generations, the present arrangements are found to be unsustainable when indexed to productivity growth, but the required policy adjustment can be minimal. The implementation of a sustainable system indicates a sharp decrease of the budget deficit in the coming decades as the alleviating factors will occur prior to the introduction of the considerable effects of aging.

Mandatory pensions and personal savings in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

The displacement effect of security and pension wealth on free household savings in the Netherlands was determined using microdata. The government implements an open and liberal social security system providing high and stable pension schemes to retired individuals. Though the amount of contractual savings are going up at the expense of non-contractual savings, the total household savings are high and fairly stable. An increase in the coverage of private pensions would often also increase savings.
