The U.K. market for jeans was affected by the long economic recession and sales stood at 60 million pounds sterling in 1995. The women's jeans sector has experienced most growth with sales rising to 17 million pairs in 1995 and accounting for 28% of total volume. Some 40% of jeans sold in 1994 were made in the U.K., against 27% in 1992. The leading player in the market is Levi-Strauss UK, with other major brands including VF Corp.'s Wrangler and Lee. It is forecast that the jeans market will reach 1.16 billion pounds sterling in 1996, rising to 1.44 billion pounds sterling by 2000.

The United Kingdom market for jeans is expected to decline by volume to 38.4 million pairs in the year 2001 from 43 million pairs in 1997, while declining by value to 1.08 billion pounds sterling from 1.16 billion pounds sterling at current prices. Denim jeans sales grew 4% by value during 1992-97, but declined 6% by volume. The average price of a pair of jeans grew nearly 12% to 26.86 pounds sterling in 1997 from a little more than 24 pounds sterling in 1992. The market for designer label jeans has risen substantially.
