Men's shirts

Article Abstract:

The UK market for men's shirts rose by 21% in real terms in 1991-95, to 1.64 billion pounds sterling, with volume sales rising by 11%. Cotton shirts account for 42% of the market, while there has recently been a revival in linen shirts. UK output of men's shirts rose by 9% by value in 1993-94, to 220.7 million pounds sterling, but 90% of the UK men's shirt market, by value, is accounted for by imports. Trends in the market include the development of non-iron or crease-resistant fabrics for work shirts, and the growing popularity of 'Fridaywear', which has boosted the casual sector.

Department store clothing

Article Abstract:

Department stores held 7.5% of the UK clothing and footwear market in 1994, with a particular growth in sales of womenswear and childrenswear. Department stores are coming under threat from out of town retail developments, but are responding by re-evaluating their clothing ranges and in some cases by entering into shopping centre developments. Sales of clothing and footwear through department stores are predicted to rise by 16% in the period to 1999.

Teenagewear

Article Abstract:

The UK Market for teenage clothing is expected to reach 2.26 billion pounds sterling in 1998, rising by 22% since 1993. The teenage girls' sector accounts for 55.55% of the value market, against 57% in 1995, with branded teenage boys' clothing increasing its market share. It is forecast that the retail market for teenagewear will reach 2.76 billion pounds sterling by 2002.
