Light on the dark ages
Article Abstract:
Author Annabel Wharton calls for a reformed treatment of the study of cities in the Late Antique Near Eastern area which had been previously studied to shed light on western European history. These sites, on their own, are worthy of scholarly examination. These thoughts are echoed by editors Leslie Webster and Michelle Brown in the book 'The Transformation of the Roman World.' The book traces the transformation of the Roman empire to the medieval European civilization. The same theme is elucidated in the book 'Towns in Transition,' edited by N. Christie and S.T. Loseby.

A search for Korean uniqueness
Article Abstract:
Elements of Korea's uniqueness include slave society, the aristocracy and yangban elite, hereditary factionalism, a weak monarchy, and the longevity and stability of dynasties. Recent Korean historiography has focused on nurturing national pride to counter the negative verdict of Japanese historians that justified Japan's colonial dominance of Korea. Korean nationalist historians have attempted to emphasize Korea's uniqueness by denying cultural borrowing from China, but their efforts are too self-serving to be credible.
