Article Abstract:
Marie Nyswander was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who trained in Cornell University and was a prominent member of the team that developed the use of methadone in the treatment of heroin abuse. Methadone is a synthetic narcotic developed to replace morphine. The drug relieves narcotic hunger but does not induce alternating euphoria and withdrawal symptoms. Stabilization of narcotic addicts using methadone results in their functioning normally and reduces HIV infection among them.

The Eagles, award-wining basketball team of North Carolina College for black students, and the Blue Devils, a team from white Duke Univ, played in the gym of the black school. The dangerous hate-filled atmosphere of the times, the surreptitious route to the school and the games are described.
