Run into the sand? The limits to growth in Barbados
Article Abstract:
Barbados has enjoyed strong economic growth since it gained independence in 1966, but the post-independence model of growth no longer seems to meet the needs of the country's economy. The strong growth since the 1960s has been due largely to an expansionary fiscal policy. This left the government with large foreign debts, and at the end of the 1980s it became hard for the government to obtain new foreign funding. Following the first decline in nominal national income for nearly 50 years, in 1991, Barbados implemented an IMF stabilisation programme.
