Quarterly report - August 1998
Article Abstract:
Capital outlays, inventory investment schemes, and solid hiring continue to top the agenda of small business owners despite prevailing concerns about the overall economic direction. Hiring initiatives slid to 15% for all member firms of the National Federation of Independent Business which were surveyed for July 1998. Despite the 2-point drop from June 1998, however, this figure is still considered robust. Meanwhile, 19% considered looking for qualified labor as the most serious among current problems. Also, average selling price hikes were disclosed by a net 4% of the firms.

Article Abstract:
The third quarter gross domestic product growth in 1998 in small businesses came in as forecasted by the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index. Though there have been forecasts of a lag in the general growth all year, no unsteadiness has emerged in the NFIB survey data. The most serious concern for future growth is the extreme dearth of labor and skills that owners continue to struggle with.
