The Battle for America
Article Abstract:
Citicorp is mounting a legal battle to change state banking laws which forbid incorporated banks within a state from being owned by banks in another state. Banks may lend money in many states, but not receive deposits. Citicorp has been successful in buying several ailing savings and loan associations in various states. Congress is being urged to reform federal banking laws. Regional banking reciprocity laws are protecting smaller banks, but the constitutionality of such laws is being challenged. New York and Maine have national reciprocity banking laws. Citicorp is pressing the legal limits in several states. The success of this policy remains uncertain, as opposition to widespread change is intense.

Slings, Arrows and Not-So-Outraged Working America
Article Abstract:
President Reagan will likely be able to take credit for the upturn in the American economy during his re-election campaign, however, several other issues have not developed as favorably. These include Middle Eastern and South American foreign policy and the investigation of Edwin Meese, his appointee to attorney general. Despite these setbacks, polls show that about forty-five percent of the blue-collar voters favor Reagan's re-election. Union leadership may not have the power to return members to the Democratic fold. Union members tend to be more conservative than union leaders.
