The boundaries of the firm revisited

Article Abstract:

There are advantages associated with taking a broad view of the firm and of what determines a firm's boundaries. It is important to be aware that ownership patterns respond to many factors, including difficulties in transferring knowledge and concerns for common assets. It is possible to argue that only a small part of the large-scale organizational change that appears to be taking place can be easily explained by conventional transaction cost theory in which hold-up difficulties are resolved by integration.
