The impact of Indian gaming on a tribal economy and economic development strategy: the White Mountain Apache experience

Article Abstract:

The experience of the White Mountain Apache tribe of Arizona on reservation gaming is examined in terms of economic development. The direct and indirect benefits derived from reservation gaming is also considered. It was concluded that economic benefits such as job creation, income generation and increased self-esteem far outweigh minor negative impacts such as problems on infrastructure, traffic and parking.

The proliferation of reservation gaming has forced economic developers to examine its economic issues. The impact of reservation gaming on the economic development of native American communities is analyzed. The issues examined include economic benefits to the tribe, sustainability of gaming and gaming as a substitute for new limitations on government economic support.

Casino gaming is the easiest approach to economic growth. This has also proliferated among Indian reservations. However, the tribes have forgotten the importance of trade areas, market potential and retail analysis in adopting reservation gaming. The economic impact of local and regional gaming in North Dakota is studied.
