Glen coup
Article Abstract:
Sika deer are breeding with red deer in Scotland and are producing hybrids which threaten the purity of red deer stock. The Scottish economy benefits from the hunting of red deer which have larger antlers than sika deer, and this hybridization could threaten the economy. There have been calls to increase culling of sika deer and to prevent their introduction into areas such as islands that they have not yet penetrated. The spread of sika also offers opportunities for scientists studying hybrids, and sika can produce good quality venison which some argue is better than that of red deer.
