Win Some, Lose Some
Article Abstract:
Syrian leaders are concerned that their Lebanese allies, the Shia and Druze, may become too self-reliant. They are also concerned about potential problems if the Iranians, whom they have supported, defeat Iraq. This may lead to the establishment of a radical Shia government in Iraq and a more militant leader taking control of the Shias in Lebanon, leaving Syria flanked by potentially hostile Shia governments. Yassar Arafat, continues to control the Palestine Liberation Organization. The Syrians claim to be open to negotiations, even with the United States, and perhaps to a new settlement between Lebanon and Israel.

Half a PLO Is Better than No Talks at All
Article Abstract:
Yassar Arafat is turning to Egypt and Jordan for support, following his ejection from Tripoli. The Central Committee of his Fatah Faction of the PLO criticized Arafat's visit to Egypt. A block of moderate Arab states - Egypt, Jordon, Iraq, probably Saudi Arabia, and Arafat's PLO - may be in the early stages of formation.
