5.4% pay rise masks gloom

The average earnings of academics in the UK rose by 5.4% to almost UKPd36,000/yr in 2004, vs 2003, according to the latest figures compiled by The Higher Education Supplement. While these figures are 2 percentage points higher than the national pay award for 2004, union leaders claim that the large salaries earned by a very small minority are disguising the real figures for the majority of university staff.

'Deplorable' pay inequity persists

An analysis of data compiled by the Higher Education Statistics Agency relating to the level of academic salaries at universities in the UK in 2003-2004. The figures reveal that, on average, female academics still earn less than their male counterparts at all job grades and that at some levels the disparity is nearly 20%.

Academics earned, on average, more than GBP 36,000 in 2005, according to figures compiled for The Times Higher. Average academic salary was GBP 36,535, with professors earning an average of GBP 59,000, senior lecturers just under GBP 42,000, lecturers GBP 33,000 and researchers GBP 26,000.
