A good jolt to system

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the impact of the impact of the teaching quality assessment (TQA) exercise conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) is made in the light of the QAA's publication of the findings of the reviews and assessments it conducted in England and Northern Ireland between 1993 and 2001. It is argued that while the TQA was hated by the majority of university vice-chancellors, it actually served to set institutions in the UK on a beneficial quality curve as it forced the academic community to take a careful, systematic look at its teaching activities in a way that had never been done before.

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the publication of a new strategic plan in the UK by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education are examined from the point of view that by spelling out its beliefs, the QAA is underlining its commitment to higher education. It is argued that the QAA's core values of dealing with the inherent importance of education, the public interest in higher education, the responsibilities of higher education providers and the entitlements of learners are vital, and that the quality of opportunities open to people needs to be assured.

The great betrayal or the great hoax?

Article Abstract:

The chief executive of the Quality Assurance Agency argues that suggestions that standards in higher education in the UK are falling are false and that they are just the moans of grumpy old men who are not prepared to accept that change can be a good thing. It is contended that people have always moaned that things are not what they used to be and that this is what is going on at the moment in relation to higher education.
