Australians lend an ear to Hefce chief

Article Abstract:

Sir Gareth Roberts, chair of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, is heading a 12-member committee of national and international experts which will advise the Government of Australia on how best to assess standards in publicly funded research. Roberts noted that while the committee would take into account the research assessment exercises undertaken in the UK and other countries, the Australian higher education sector has its own set of characteristics that separate it from the system in the UK.

Strings tangle funding purse

Article Abstract:

Vice-chancellors at universities in Australia are threatening to withdraw their support for the Government's research funding framework as a result of plans announced by Education Minister Brendan Nelson to include research council funding in the overall proposal. The moves by Nelson would alter the allocation procedure for over A$1 billion in research funds, which has caused consternation throughout the university sector.

Issues concerning the lowering of standards of the Australian higher education system are discussed, with focus on a report by the Vice Chancellor's Committee asking for additional governmental funding into the sector and a reorganisation of its infrastructure.
