Costs thwart broader access
Article Abstract:
A study carried out by the Universities and Colleges Admission Service concluded there remained a lack of students from unskilled backgrounds in higher education. It was also discovered fewer students from ethnic minorities were studying for HNDs. Some observers have suggested the introduction of maintenance fees for higher education may be linked with the decline in higher education students from these groups. Others point out poorer families may be loathe to take out large student loans to pay their fees whilst a number of students are changing to part time courses.
