Cutting edge of the city

Article Abstract:

The city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, has established the Centre for Urban Technology at the University of Newcastle's department of town and country planning. The centre, formed in 1995, aims to understand the changing links between the infrastructures concerned with urban planning, such as telecommunications, transportation, energy and water. A cross-disciplinary team looks at issues from differing perspectives in order that the city can make better use of all its resources.

Two halves together for a better whole

Article Abstract:

Julie Webster, Senior Lecturer at East London University, is to work at the European Commission's Directorate General V, following the recommendation that a team of experts should be employed to study the affects of information technology on all aspects of society. Subjects such as education and training, the environment, employment, regional cohesion and democracy will be investigated. Insecure employment contracts are becoming more numerous through the use of new technologies.
