At the city's ill heart

Article Abstract:

US welfare reform measures could be seriously undermined by an economic downturn, and there could also be serious hardship if unemployment rose at a time when welfare benefits ended. US unemployment rose when employees left inner cities and demanded higher educational standards, but this process is reversing as more long-term unemployed are finding work. A tight labor market lasting some time would encourage urban renewal and reduce crime and drug abuse levels. There is no guarantee that the tight market will last long, and there is also a drop in demand for unskilled workers which will seriously affect inner cities if unemployment rises again.

White males fight the freeze

Article Abstract:

Another class-action has been filed by a male university professor in North America, because he claims to have, like many other male colleagues, been given a very poor pay rise compared to females who are in equivalent positions. The professor, from Northern Arizona University, claims that positive discrimination has been taking place in the American universities for years, and that pay equity policies have been ignored. Similar lawsuits have been filed in other North American universities.
