Skirmish over the pressure points

Article Abstract:

12 schools from the poorer suburbs of Edinburgh are taking part in the Edinburgh University Special Entrance Initiative. It is designed to encourage young people who would otherwise leave to continue into higher education. In the Lothian region the percentage of young people going to college has increased from 12% in 1986-87 to 18% in 1990-91. During the initiative students will visit the schools and some may take part in a shadowing scheme. If those who want a place do not get good grades, they are further assessed. If successful the scheme may be extended to other colleges in the city.
