End of the road for franchising

United Kingdom colleges of further education face stricter rules for franchised course, which could lead to financial problems for some colleges. Franchising involves selling courses to community groups, businesses and other outside bodies, with the help of public funds. It was encouraged by the previous government, but criticised for some cases of poaching students and poor quality courses. The new rules include a greater emphasis on quality, proof that the local community will benefit from courses, and the need to sell courses at a price that reflects their true cost.

Lambert offers cash for code

Article Abstract:

Universities in the UK should be paid a multi-million pound sweetener to encourage them to boost their links with business, but only if they accept a new code for good management, according to a review of university collaboration with business conducted by Richard Lambert, former editor of the Financial Times, for the Treasury. Lambert's report is expected to warn that some of the top universities in the UK, most notably Cambridge and Oxford, risk losing their world-class status if they do not begin to run their affairs in a more efficient manner.

Gagging could backfire

Article Abstract:

There is concern that universities are misrepresenting the Public Interest Disclosure law by attempting to internalise procedures so that employees do not go the press. However, this makes it safer for staff to go to the press.
