Excellence into equality does go
Article Abstract:
The college fee system that gives Cambridge University an extra 1,820 pounds sterling/yr. for every student it educates appears hard to justify when half the undergraduate places it offers each year go to the 9% of students educated in the elitist public school system. Parents pay thousands of pounds sterling to educate their children privately to prepare them for access to a highly subsidised higher education system. Nevertheless the Government's objectives of equal access and accountability would not be helped if Cambridge colleges broke away from a state-supported system of higher education.

Wallflower in Clintonville
Article Abstract:
A visit to Long Island by US President Bill Clinton emphasized the difference in wealth between him and his supporters, and people who are resident in the area. A resident of Long Island explained how she had to undertake three different jobs to earn sufficient money. Closure of Grumman Aircraft in 1989 has led to more unemployment in the area. Many employers employ workers for three days in any week so they were not obliged to pay benefits. The differences between the social classes was most apparent when a couple were charged $25,000 to attend a dinner for the President.
