Flag of convenience

Article Abstract:

Professor of history at Yale University Linda Colley points to an increasingly American tone in British politics as the Labour Party becomes less leftwing. Colley, who is part English and part Welsh, explains that Labour is coming to resemble the American Democratic party and no longer considers patriotism as something vulgar to be left to the Conservatives, particularly in the run-up to the general election on May 1, 1997. However Colley argues that self-interest rather than ideological or historical allegiances will ultimately determine Britain's approach to Europe.

Friction in the diction

Article Abstract:

Steven Pinker is a Massachusetts Institute of Technology psychology professor with a particular interest in language, and he disagrees with the views of Noam Chomsky on how children create language. He sees language as a skill that helps us to pass on our genes, and as a product of evolution, while Chomsky sees it as a byproduct. He writes works that are accessible to the public, and this can attract critics. Critics of his views include Stephen Jay Gould and Steven Rose, as well as Chomsky.
