Flaws in marking revealed by QAA

Article Abstract:

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), a quality watchdog, has warned that exam questions that fail to challenge students and questions that are repeated year after year are amongst the poor assessment practices that are continuing to threaten university course standards in England. The warning comes in the QAA's "Learning from Subject Review" report, which is the product of a nine-year teaching quality assessment, the world's largest academic quality inspection exercise. The report also notes that some universities have failed to deal with repeated warnings about weaknesses in assessment but that, in general, the vast majority of students receive a good quality education.

'Partners sitting on cash for colleges'

Article Abstract:

In a report produced for the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), it is claimed that universities are siphoning off up to 50% of the public funding they receive under deals to allow their courses to be delivered by further education colleges and that they are failing to account for the amount of money they are retaining in these franchise deals. The report, which raises questions about the government's efforts to expand higher education through the college sector, was produced for Hefce by the universities of Sheffield and Warwick, the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education and City College, Manchester.
