Forensic courses cut open for analysis

The growth in forensic degree courses in the United Kingdom, there are now 313 such courses listed on the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service website, that accreditation schemes are now being piloted by forensic scientists. The issue of standards in the field of forensic science - the application of science in a legal context - is becoming an increasingly vexed one, with Brian Caddy, chair of the Forensic Science Society's academic and education committee, stating that justice depends on high standards. The society has, therefore, decided to run an accreditation scheme, which is being piloted at three universities.

Undergraduates who are saddled with debt should consider establishing their own businesses rather the working part-time in dead-end jobs, according to Oxford Entrepreneurs, a newly launched organisation set up by students at Oxford University. Alex Hearn, founding president of the organisation, believes that student entrepreneurship is bursting with concepts and ideas, but there has been no real outlet for these ideas until now and that the launch of Oxford Entrepreneurs marks a significant change in that it shows students taking responsibility for generating wealth.

New test for medics

Thousands of medical and dental students in the UK could be sitting the new UKCAT university entrance exam as early as summer 2006. The new test is designed to evaluate a student's academic potential and increase the number of working-class students entering medicine.
