Article Abstract:
Organ donation extends the lives of seriously-ill patients and may comfort the bereaved. However, demand exceeds supply. A prerequisite of transplantation, brain-stem death, occurs in only 1% of deaths in the UK. The public may also be unsure of factors affecting organ suitability. Replacing the donor card system with an opting-out scheme could improve supply.
