Going, going ... gone

Article Abstract:

Archeologists across the world are fighting to persuade governments to ratify the 1970 Unesco convention aimed at controlling the trade in antiquities. The convention also provides for governments to co-operate in recovering cultural objects that have been stolen and transported illegally over national borders. Europe is a major market for archaeological material looted from sites around the world yet the UK, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are among the countries that have yet to ratify the treaty. Illegal excavation of antiquities is threatening the heritage of many countries.
