An overview of the work being conducted by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR). It is noted that the work of the CIAR stems from a fundamental belief in the power of collective genius and an aversion to the imposition of mechanistic rules on the research process combined with a commitment to bringing together some of the leading minds with different approaches to work in the pursuit of knowledge.

The quality of the research environment is the most important consideration for a placement and those considering a placement should consult colleagues, supervisors and mentors a year or so before planning to make a move.
