Hands on market controls

Article Abstract:

The principles of the market are being applied to universities in New Zealand, to negative effect. Competition and enterprise may be effective and stimulating in other sectors but universities cannot adapt to the demands of the market and still provide continuity and quality. Government constraints on finances and curricula undermine the academic freedom of universities and affect standards of work produced.

Help students--rent a video

Article Abstract:

Students from low-income backgrounds could receive help in bridging the financial gap through a leisure technology levy. This tax, a suggestion of 20 pounds sterling, could be paid every time a recreational video or CD-Rom is rented. A suggestion of 50 pounds sterling on every sale could raise over 200 million pounds sterling per year.
