Article Abstract:
Progress continues to be made in the development of hip joint replacements. Centaur Precision and Midland Medical Technologies have cast and finished a new generation of all-metal joints following research indicating that hip joint replacements that are perfectly spherical and contain an even distribution of carbide particles last a very long time. Orthopaedic surgeon Derek McMinn of Birmingham Nuffield Hospital has developed a technique involving grinding material off the surface of the ball of the thigh bone and capping the bone with a steel hemisphere held with a short locating pin.
