Patients draw healing power from the online lifeline

Article Abstract:

The Cochrane Collaboration, established in 1994, aims to make latest medical research available on the internet. Inspired by epidemiologist Archie Cochrane, it brings together information from more than 40 different groups reviewing developments in various areas of medicine. It includes the Cochrane Cancer Network, which is based in the UK but has more than 600 volunteers across the world. Teams aim to collate all trials, to review methods used and results and to summarize findings.

Inequality in teaching pay

Article Abstract:

Research students who teach in United Kingdom universities may find that this hampers their completing research work, but there are also benefits such as understanding the subject better, and career experience. Male respondents were paid an average of a little over 17 pounds sterling per hour, compared with 13 pounds for women, though it is unclear whether preparation is included. Some research students have to teach due to lack of funding.

Are sabbaticals being phased out?

Article Abstract:

A sabbatical is highly valued by academics as it gives time away from teaching and administrative duties, and allows an uninterrupted time of research. However there is some indication that in old universities sabbaticals are being eroded away by heavy workloads, and new universities simply do not have the necessary resources.
