Article Abstract:

The publication of performance indicators for British universities have been criticised by some higher education experts who have suggested the benchmarking system has not taking into consideration the problem of social exclusion. Others have pointed out universities outlive governments therefore they must not be used purely to fulfill political objectives in education. The government has warned the universities they must tackle areas were they are not reaching the required standards. The problems of high drop out rates must also be resolved.

Pay fight threatens Labour proposal

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom higher education lecturers will not support government plans to increase the number of places in higher education unless lecturers' pay is increased. The Natfhe labor union, and the Association of University Teachers (AUT) are prepared to take industrial action, even if the government's expansion plans are threatened. The AUT has sought a pay rise of 10% and has rejected an offer of 3% from the Universities and College Lecturers Employers Association.

Paisley puts the elite to shame

Article Abstract:

The extent to which universities attract and retain students from under-represented neighbourhoods is analysed. The high success rate of Paisley University is contrasted with older universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol and Durham.
