Intellectual fibre, not nuggets

Article Abstract:

The UK government wants, if its latest white paper on the future of higher education is to be believed, to create a system of "McUniversities", which serve a diet of intellectual fast food, only teaching and not engaging in any research activities. It is argued that the basis of the government's white paper is flawed, as universities are not establishments set up to teach students, but rather that the teaching that goes on in an university is a byproduct of the process of research, and that future students might be wiser to avoid the fast food of the government designed system and instead should start saving and investing to pay for slow intellectual food.
