Wounded West could still bite
Article Abstract:
A committee established in Jan. 1997 to advise the Australian government on the future of the country's higher education system over the next 20 years had its key proposals rejected even before the official release of its preliminary report. The committee, chaired by former classics teacher and private school headmaster Roderick West, had proposed the introduction of a student voucher system and the extension of the Higher Education Contribution Scheme to students at post-secondary technical colleges. The report, which followed eight months of consultation, was condemned by staff and student organisations.

Foreign and fee payer boom
Article Abstract:
There has been a two-fold increase in the number of foreign students at Australian universities in the five years to 1993, according to government statistics, while the number of fee-paying students has quintupled in this period. A larger proportion of foreign students pay fees, and quotas have been abolished, though universities first have to meet obligations to Australian students. The Pacific region accounts for nearly 20% of foreign students, and New Zealnd is the country which supplies most students from abroad.
