Leagues apart
Article Abstract:
The UK comprehensive schooling system has failed to eradicate inequality in education. Some 27% of school leavers, from state schools, move to higher education compared to 88% from private schools. The UK government should start to remedy the inequalities by ensuring state candidates attend the premier universities. It should encourage the Open University to work with the working class and it must end all subsidies, in the form of charitable status, to private schools. Young people have a one in three chance of attending university but many of the working class remain excluded.

Blunkett's axe hovers over TTA
Article Abstract:
A government review of the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) is due to be published in April 1999, with control of the core responsibilities of the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) likely to be taken over by government ministers, says UK Secretary of State for Education and Employment David Blunkett. The government will also become more involved in policy, says Blunkett. A General Teaching Council is due to become operational, which will eliminate the need for the TTA, say some observers.
