Madness of a class-ridden system

Article Abstract:

UK universities are becoming more and more reliant on the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals and the funding councils. Graduates who want to continue their education and become a member of the academic profession need more funds and luck than those in the same position in the 1950s. There is an obvious social divide within the academic profession. The UK appears to be imitating the worst aspects of US higher education system.

Adding an annexe to the ivory towers

Article Abstract:

The number of students in higher education has risen from 446,000 in 1971 to 1.5 million in 1996. Universities have been encouraged to pursue market principles and compete for students. The economic recession has meant a reduction in government funding, universities may not be able to cater for these large numbers or maintain the quality of their courses.
