Stage presence; professional speakers share their techniques
Article Abstract:
Several professional speakers offer a variety of ways to put a creative spark into their presentations. Charles Ogletree, a nationally acclaimed legal theorist, uses videotapes, while Christopher Childs, principal speaker for Greenpeace USA, uses slides for his educational slide show. Daniel Stern, vice president of the Leigh Bureau in New Jersey, believes that technology is often an unnecessary crutch. Kathleen Dixon, executive speechwriter, and C.J. Maupin, manager of executive communications, are the communicators behind Apple Computer executives. Many of their speeches are accompanied by live demonstrations and multimedia technology.

Misuse of Kazakh capital
Article Abstract:
Academics in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan feel that investment in the country's education infrastructure would have been a more worthwhile use of the estimated $1 billion spent on the country's new capital city, Astana. University lecturers in Astana, some of whom earn just $30/mo., have seen no improvement in their living standards in the year since the Kazakh capital was moved from Almaty. Some academics fear that moves to replace the centralised education system of the Soviet era with more western structures, processes and practices will undermine standards.
