Issues relating to the research operations conducted by new universities in the United Kingdom are examined in the light of the white paper on higher education revealed by the government in January 2003 which aims to divide the country's universities up into those with a full range of research and teaching and those which will be awarded no money for research and which may not even retain the right to award research degrees. Mark Cross, pro vice-chancellor of Greenwich University, argues that research is important to new universities if they want to keep their staff at the leading edge of their professions and subjects and their postgraduate and undergraduate courses supported by an adequate intellectual challenge, and he also believes that the Department for Education and Skills misunderstands some basic points about how new universities operate.

NHS to get injection of genetics knowledge
Article Abstract:
Alan Milburn, the UK's secretary of state for health, is to publish a white paper on genetics with the aim of pushing knowledge of the subject deep into the National Health Service (NHS), as well as the rest of government. The white paper, which is due to be published before summer 2003, is likely to provide more money for the treatment of genetic diseases and involve an increase in the number of genetics professionals employed by the NHS so that waiting times for genetic-disease sufferers can be reduced.
