Article Abstract:

A number of private-sector companies have applied for degree-awarding powers in the UK as a result of new rules introduced by the Government which allow teaching-only institutions, including commercial organisations, to become universities. It is feared that the entry of the private sector into the university sector could threaten jobs and courses.

Fresh blow to federal future

Article Abstract:

University College London has decided to begin using its new degree awarding powers, bring it one step closer to breaking away from the University of London (UoL). The move is expected to raise further questions about UoL, a federal university, in the aftermath of the decision by Imperial College London to leave the university.
