Problem-Solving: Your Key to Creative Thinking
Article Abstract:
Creative writing assignments for teenagers need to have relevance to their lives. Topics such as personal problems, or problems of their school, community, or country, will make writing seem less artificial. In order to use problem-solving as a writing exercise, students first need to learn the problem-solving process. This process is detailed in seven steps which include identification, determining causes and consequences, brainstorming solutions, throwing out unworkable solutions, choosing one or two best solutions, letting the problem alone for a while, and, developing strategy for implementation. In order that students write creatively, and not write a research paper, ideas can be suggested, such as writing a newspaper article as an expert, or writing opening statements for a panel discussion. A detailed example of one approach is described.

Integrating Thinking Skills into the Content Areas
Article Abstract:
American educators have recently been criticized for not teaching higher order thinking skills. It had been assumed that students would pick up these skills during the educational process. If students do not automatically pick up these skills, teachers may need to be more explicit about developing these skills by pointing out which thinking skills are actually being used. A partial list of thinking skills is provided under the major categories of analysis, synthesis summarizing, inferring and evaluating.
