Rough ride for Serbian ruler
Article Abstract:
Professor Miladin Zivotic, head of the Belgrade University philosophy department until Oct. 1996, has long opposed the Serbian regime's aggressive policies. However Zivotic, unlike most of his colleagues, does not take part in the protests by students who are demanding the resignation of Serbian Pres. Slobodan Milosevic and of the university's current rector, Dragutin Velickovic. He nevertheless considers the students' demands to be realistic and defends them against claims that their protests are essentially nationalistic.

Michigan aids shattered library
Article Abstract:
The Sarajevo University library in Bosnia/Herzegovina was burnt out by incendiary bombs in Aug 1992 during the conflict in Bosnia. Library officials are planning to rebuild the collection in Sarajevo and hope to restore some 80% of the 70,000 items which were previously situated in the library. The University of Michigan has given the Sarajevo library a bibliography of the 2,700 items featuring Bosnia and Herzegovina which are held in libraries throughout Michigan.

Communist outpost in search of a new identity
Article Abstract:
Kaliningrad State University is threatened with closure or may be used solely for teacher training. Physically isolated from Russia its brightest residents have hitherto gone to Moscow or St Petersburg to study. The university is also noted for its strong communist sympathies. Until World War 2 the province belonged to Germany and was called Konigsberg. The region sees its future as being linked with Russia and western Europe.
