Science can give security
Article Abstract:
Funding for Nato's science programme accounts for only a very small proportion of this organization's annual budget of around $2 billion. There is considerable potential to improve Nato's work in education, technology and science by moving some of its funding away from military operations. This would bring dramatic advantages for both Nato's long-standing members and for newly democratizing countries in central and eastern Europe. Placing more emphasis on science would assist Nato in its role of boosting international security.

Damaging shutdown
Article Abstract:
The National Science Foundation, the National Gallery and other museums play an important role in the countries education, although the four-week shut-down of federal government experienced at the beginning of 1996 has had a lasting damaging effect on the country's science research institute employees. Self-esteem is at an all-time low because employees were not allowed to work during the shut-down period and only received half their wages because they were considered 'non-essential'.

Cyberspace under siege
Article Abstract:
Cyberspace, as represented by the Internet, was initially hailed as a wonderful new technology which would bring equality to the world. However, opposition to cyberspace is now starting to emerge, even from those who have long experience in the computer industry. Some observers now claim that online activities lack real life and that they can become dangerously addictive.
