Shortcut to success
Article Abstract:
The current corner-cutting culture of academe is to blame for cheating, rather than students. The argument is made in the light of a poll of 31 universities in the United Kingdom made by BBC Radio 4's "The World at One" programme, which revealed that plagiarism has become a widespread practice, with 1,600 cases being identified this year. It is suggested that students are not really to blame for this, rather the fault lies with institutions that are fast forgetting the meaning of real university study, thus causing some academics to agonise over whether their students actually realised that they were plagiarising when the cut and pasted information into their essays without properly citing it.

Article Abstract:
Universities need to speak out against the crude economics and raw politics that are in danger of ruining their services by reducing them to standardised efforts that can be easily measured, quantified and assessed before being passed on to the customer. It is argued that universities, through their submission to the auditing ethos, are adopting dumbed-down pedagogy and practices and are weakening the integrity of the intellectual activity that is supposed to be at their heart.

Oxford takes out a contract on campus life
Article Abstract:
Oxford University will introduce legally binding contracts for all students from September 2006 which will require students to attend lectures. The problem with contracts is they transform relationships into transactions, resulting in no incentive to give or take or assist.
