Swimming with the sharks

Article Abstract:

The mayor of New York, NY, has sought to make political capital from the outrage sparked by an art exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in Oct. 1999. The mayor's first response to the 'offensive' works in the 'Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection' exhibition was to threaten to close the museum. This provoked such public outrage that he retracted his threat, threatening instead to end the city's $7 million/yr. contribution to the museum. However, even if some of the works in the show are disgusting, it is necessary to maintain a level of public trust in the museum's directors.

Heroes and villeins

Article Abstract:

The feeling of awe that African-American actor and singer Paul Robeson inspired in people is discussed by a woman for whom a visit to the First Infantry Division in Grafenwoehr, Germany, caused a resurgence of the awe she experienced as a junior high school student watching Robeson's performance in 'Othello.' The fruits of Robeson's never-ending struggle to eliminate fascism and intolerance worldwide were evident in the multi-hued US, Nato and allied troops training at Grafenwoehr.
